Adjust the video quality to match your needs and internet connection strength. Choosing the right video definition can help maintain a clear and stable call experience.
Doxy.me can automatically adjust video quality when internet or device performance changes. Premium providers can also manually choose a video definition, including Low Definition, Standard Definition, and High Definition.
Available on all plans ⭐ Works on desktop and mobile
How to change your video definition
Free users will automatically move between LD, SD, or audio-only based on their internet connection strength.
Premium users can manually select a video definition (including HD). Easily adjust your video definition during a session:
While in a doxy.me call, navigate to the Control Bar or the Settings menu in your Self-Preview window
Select Video Definition
Choose the option that works best for you and your internet connection:
Auto (Automatically adjusts based on your connection) - Recommended
LD (Low Definition)
SD (Standard Definition)
HD (High Definition) - Premium only
💡 Auto is the recommended option. With Auto, doxy.me dynamically adjusts your video quality based on real-time internet bandwidth. This helps maintain your video connection even if your internet strength changes during the call.
Video definition levels explained
Auto (A)
Automatically adjusts the video definition based on network and device performance to help keep the call connected
💡 Recommended for: Most sessions, particularly when connection quality may change during the call
Low Definition (LD)
Uses less data and device processing power than Standard or High Definition, which can help maintain a more stable call
When a Premium provider manually selects LD, doxy.me also turns on Low Data Mode on supported screen sizes.
💡 Recommended for: Sessions with pixelated, frozen, or choppy video, or when you or your patient have limited internet connectivity
Standard Definition (SD)
Provides clearer video than Low Definition but requires more bandwidth and device processing power
💡 Recommended for: Typical appointments where facial expressions, movement, or physical features need to be seen clearly
High Definition (HD)
Provides the clearest picture, but requires the most bandwidth and computer power
💡 Recommended for: An appointment where fine details are essential for accurate assessment such as dermatology, wound care, or identifying non-verbal cues
What is low data mode?
Low data mode gives providers a clearer, more stable video view when connection quality is limited.
When a Premium provider manually selects LD, the video quality is lowered for everyone in the call and the call switches to a smaller layout. Keeping the video within a smaller viewing area can help reduce pixelation instead of stretching lower-quality video across the full screen.
Low data mode is available for:
1:1 calls
Group Calls using Speaker Mode
Medium and large screens that are at least 600 pixels wide
When low data mode turns on
Low data mode only turns on when a Premium provider manually selects LD from the in-call Control Bar or Settings. Your device may prompt you to turn on low data mode with a subtle notification.
A small notification appears to prompt low data mode
It does not turn on when:
Auto automatically reduces the video quality to LD
A Free user’s video automatically changes to LD
The call is viewed on a mobile device or screen narrower than 600 pixels
On smaller screens, manually selecting LD still lowers the video quality for everyone in the call, but the layout does not change.
💡 Recommended for:
Pixelated or blurry video
Choppy looking movement
Freezing videos
Weak or unstable internet connections
Participant using a device with limited processing power
Maintaining a stable connection
A message will alert when the connection has improved
💡 Tips:
Changing the video definition will change how you see patients and how patients see you
Your patients cannot independently adjust their own video quality
If you experience freezing or dropped calls, switch to LD or enable Auto for better stability
Running other programs while using doxy.me may impact the video quality
Using Virtual Background? Changing video definition may briefly pause your Virtual Background, showing your real background for a couple of seconds. Video and audio stay active.
Audio-only mode
Sometimes internet connections aren’t strong enough, or a device may not have the capacity to fully support video during a session. When this happens, doxy.me will automatically switch the call to audio-only mode.
In audio-only mode, some or all video feeds may be temporarily turned off. This ensures the session can continue smoothly, even when video isn’t possible. All participants receive a notification when the switch occurs, so everyone understands what’s happening.
As soon as the internet connection improves or device performance stabilizes, video feeds can return automatically, allowing the session to continue with both video and audio.
